What are the HoloLens retirement deadlines?
Three separate dates matter, and they are not the same date. Most migration plans we see are built around 2027 and are therefore a year late.

One caveat on the 2027 date: the same release notes state that for UK Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) Act conformance, the minimum security update period is 28 February 2028 for units purchased up to 28 February 2025. Support commitments can therefore vary by unit and regulatory market, so check yours rather than assuming the headline date.
Both dates are confirmed by Microsoft: the Dynamics 365 lifecycle announcement and the HoloLens 2 release notes, which confirm the November 2024 update was the final feature release with monthly security servicing continuing through December 2027.
The practical consequence is that if your AR training runs on HoloLens 2 with Guides, the software reaches end of support a full year before the device does. Microsoft has not released a replacement product. Its official guidance points customers to third-party solutions on the Microsoft Marketplace, or to the spatial annotation feature in Microsoft Teams Mobile for some remote-assist scenarios.
What happens to Dynamics 365 Guides content after December 2026?
Your authored content does not disappear on 1 January 2027, but the applications do. Microsoft's documentation states Guides and Remote Assist "will no longer be available" after that date.
Microsoft does publish a Content Migration Tool (public preview), a PowerShell script that copies Guides content from one Dataverse environment to another, so the content is not stranded. What it does not do is convert anything into a format another XR platform can render. Moving content sideways within Dataverse is not the same as leaving Dataverse.
That leaves three options:
Rebuild every procedure by hand in a new platform. Realistic only if you have a handful of guides.

What replaces Dynamics 365 Guides and Remote Assist?
The two Microsoft products no longer divide cleanly. From Guides 8.0 onwards, remote expert calling was folded into Guides itself. Microsoft's own FAQ notes that Guides has a Calls dashboard and that there is no built-in way to limit a Guides user to calling only. So it is more useful to map by capability than by product name:

Two details worth knowing before you plan around this:
The mobile app is already deprecated. Dynamics 365 Remote Assist mobile was deprecated on 25 March 2025. Microsoft's guidance is that existing customers get similar capabilities through Microsoft Teams mobile instead, so the function continues, but on a different product. If part of your workflow ran on phones rather than HoloLens, that migration has effectively already happened.
You may be licensed for these without knowing it. The Dynamics 365 Field Service license includes Guides and Remote Assist at no extra cost. Teams who never bought either product directly may still have people using them, which is why the inventory step below matters more than it sounds.
Microsoft's suggested path for remote assist is spatial annotation in Teams Mobile. That covers a phone-held call, but not a hands-free headset session, and it requires one participant to hold a Field Service, Guides, or Remote Assist license, two of which are the licences being retired. What is the difference between see-through and pass-through AR?
This is the single most important distinction when replacing HoloLens 2, and it is where most comparison articles go wrong. The two terms describe optics, not brands or operating systems.
Optical see-through (OST) means the worker looks through a transparent lens at the real world with their own eyes. Digital content is reflected onto that lens. There is no camera between the worker and the machine, so there is no latency, no resolution ceiling on reality, and no failure mode where a dead battery blinds someone mid-task. HoloLens 2 was an optical see-through device. So are the SiNGRAY G2 and XREAL AURA.
Video pass-through means cameras capture the real world and reproduce it on opaque internal displays. Image quality of the digital content is far higher, and the same device can switch to fully immersive VR. But the worker is seeing a reconstruction, with a few milliseconds of delay, reduced depth accuracy at arm's length, and difficulty in very bright or very dim light. Meta Quest 3 and Samsung Galaxy XR are pass-through devices.
A note on Android XR: Android XR is an operating system, not an optics category. It runs on pass-through headsets like Samsung Galaxy XR and on optical see-through glasses like XREAL AURA.

How should you evaluate a HoloLens replacement?
Beyond optics, five criteria decide whether a deployment survives its second year. Apply them to any HoloLens alternatives on your shortlist, not only the four compared here.
Field of view. Measured horizontally, vertically, and diagonally, and vendors quote whichever number flatters them. HoloLens 2 was 43° diagonal / 40° horizontal. Always compare like with like, and ask which axis a spec sheet means.
Standalone versus tethered. A tethered device with a pocket compute puck is lighter on the head but adds a cable and a second thing to charge, manage, and lose. On a factory floor, cables catch.
Ruggedisation and serviceability. Ask for the IP rating, the drop spec, whether the battery is swappable, and what the replacement-unit lead time is. HoloLens taught this lesson expensively: a device you cannot replace is a deployment you cannot scale.
Stated support lifetime. Ask for it in writing before you buy. This is the question nobody asked in 2019 and everybody is asking now.
Content portability. The hardware question will recur in three to five years. The only way to stop paying the migration cost again is to keep authored content in a platform that renders to whatever device comes next.
Which optical see-through HoloLens alternatives are available in 2026?

Trade-off to know: birdbath optics are far cheaper to produce than the waveguides HoloLens 2 used, but display brightness and lens transparency trade against each other. To keep virtual content opaque, the view of the real world is dimmed. That is acceptable indoors and a real consideration in bright sun.
2. XREAL AURA: the lightest way into Android XR
Announced at AWE 2026 and launching Autumn 2026, AURA is the first optical see-through glasses running the full immersive version of Android XR, with Gemini integrated. It is a genuinely different form factor: under 95 g on the face, because compute and battery live in a tethered pocket unit.

Trade-offs to know: it is tethered, so there is a cable and a second device to manage. Reviewers at Google I/O noted the real world appears somewhat dimmed and there is edge blurring at the periphery of the 70° display. And it is a consumer-first platform, so enterprise device management on Android XR is newer than on purpose-built industrial hardware.
Which pass-through HoloLens alternatives are available in 2026?
1. Meta Quest 3: the cost-effective virtual training room standard

Quest 3 is a practical choice for immersive training at scale, and by a wide margin the cheapest way to put a capable mixed-reality headset on many heads.
Optics: Video pass-through, pancake lenses
Field of view: approximately 110° horizontal
Display: 2064×2208 per eye, 90–120 Hz
Compute: Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, 8 GB RAM

Price: $599.99 for the 512 GB model, increased by $100 on 19 April 2026, which Meta attributed to the global surge in memory-chip costs
Best for: virtual training rooms, cohort onboarding, simulation of machinery the trainee cannot access physically, and any programme where headset count matters more than per-device capability.

Trade-offs to know: pass-through resolution and depth accuracy are adequate rather than good for close-up hand work on real equipment. At 515 g it is front-heavy for long shifts. It is not a field device.
2. Samsung Galaxy XR: high-fidelity Android XR with a stated support window
Samsung's Android XR headset, built with Google and Qualcomm, and the highest-resolution device in this comparison.

The reason this device deserves a second look from anyone burned by HoloLens: Samsung has committed to regular software updates including security patches for up to five years, and Android XR now supports Android Enterprise, the same management framework you already use for Android phones and tablets. A published support horizon is exactly what was missing from the last generation of enterprise AR.
Best for: design review, high-fidelity digital twin visualisation, and organisations standardising on Android XR across both headsets and glasses.
Trade-offs to know: the battery is external and tethered to the headset, and controllers cost extra. The bigger operational constraint is runtime. Two hours of general use does not cover a shift, and unlike the SiNGRAY G2 the pack is not designed to be hot-swapped, so plan around charging cycles or mains power rather than continuous wear.

Which other HoloLens alternatives did we consider?
Four further devices were assessed and left out of the main comparison.
Magic Leap 2. No longer sold. Direct sales ended on 31 March 2026, and support for existing units runs to 31 December 2027, the same date as HoloLens 2. Specifying it now would mean starting a migration that already has a published end date.
DigiLens ARGO. A rugged standalone waveguide device with greater than 85% see-through transparency and a 30° field of view. That narrower display suits text, checklists and equipment callouts, but offers less room for large digital twins than the optical see-through devices compared above.
Apple Vision Pro. Excluded on cost and form factor rather than capability. At $3,699 and 750 to 800 grams before the external battery, it is a design review and visualisation device rather than something a technician wears through a shift.
RealWear Arc 3 and other assisted reality wearables. RealWear draws this distinction itself: assisted reality puts information on a monocular display in the wearer's peripheral vision, controlled entirely by voice, rather than anchoring content in 3D space. For hands-free document access, remote calls and checklists in high-noise environments it is often the better answer. It cannot replace holographic work instructions, which is what HoloLens deployments were built on.
How do you migrate HoloLens content without rebuilding it?
The hardware decision is the visible problem. The expensive one is the content. Here is the sequence that works.
Inventory what you actually have. Every guide, procedure, and remote-assist workflow, with an owner and a usage figure. Check Field Service licence holders too, since Guides and Remote Assist are bundled with it. Most organisations discover a third of their authored content is dormant and does not need migrating at all.
Separate assets from authoring. Your CAD models, media, part numbers, and step logic are portable. The HoloLens-specific packaging is not. Recover the former. This is what the Dynamics 365 Guides migration tool is for, rather than doing it by hand.
